Janes Backyard Chickens, Backyard Birdwatching and Gardening

It all started with a trip to Cenex for some straw. We were using it to soak up muddy areas while we built our house. It was free chicken day. I didn't know this. When I got up to pay for the straw the clerk informed me that I had two free chickens coming with my purchase and which ones did I want.

Chickens? No, I didn't need any chickens, it was too soon. We were not even going to have a house to live in for months. I left, drove around a bit and I couldn't stop thinking about them. I went back to claim my two free chickens. By the time I finished buying all the things I needed for two baby chickens I qualified for two more baby chickens!

I guess there really is no such thing as a "free chicken" but I love them and this webite is all about the sheer joy of keeping backyard chickens as well as backyard birdwatching and gardening.

All things I get to do now that we are actually living in our dream home!

I don't know what it is but lately we have been seeing a ton of birds and wildlife. It might have to do with the bounty of berries and fish or perhaps it's all the birds leaving the nest about now.

The Heron has been fishing on our banks every evening.

We are starting to see the deer. I have'nt seen them all year and now I am seeing four.

While I don't have a picture, our neighbors have seen a black bear out there. I can't wait to see him.

Even though it's only mid August you can already see signs that fall is around the corner.

Soon the young Great Horned owls will be looking for their own territory.

I have to be very carfull about the chickens here soon as the young owls will even try to hunt in the daylight hours.

I have come across the coolest site for learning about birds. http://www.whatbird.com They have logged information on over 900 birds. One of the best parts of this site is their search engine for identifying birds.

It breaks it down into body shape, size and color. Then goes further to beak size and shape and region. My husband used it successfully to identify a bird he had been seeing while out on the river that I hadn't seen yet. They turned out to be Cedar Waxwings.

You can also go in and print your own custom field guides here.
http://www.whatbird.com/Registration/MAG/Make-a-Guide_Landing.aspx

How great is that for going in and printing a custom guide of your personal life list?

There is a free demo to try but once you subscribe (and it's very reasonable at $9.95, $14.95 and $24.95) you can download and print as many as you want.

Whatbird also has a forum where you can interact with other birders and an area where you can set up a free blog and a photo gallery.

Of course, I couldn't resist setting up yet another blog. http://www.whatbird.com/forums/blogs/duck_duck_goose/default.aspx

So, if you are a serious birder or just enjoy your backyard feeders check out this site.

I took these pictures this morning. This first picture is where I was. In my living room, shooting through the glass with no zoom. The mergansers are right below. I am zoomed in 12x to capture them. I then cropped the pictures even closer and resized them for the web.

This is the second time I have seen this group. They were diving and playing this morning so I couldn't tell if all nine were still there.

When you keep chickens ( or any animals) you have a responsibility to keep them safe. I have gone through several hen areas and each one gets better. Over the last year we did loose two hens to a mink and one to an owl. Each time I rebuilt their home.

I think the latest is the best. I picked up a really nice hen house from a neighbor who was not going to have chickens anymore. It just fit in my truck. It is a nice secure nesting and sleeping home. The problem was how was I going to be able to lock them up at night and still give them a yard to peck around in until I let them out in the morning.

So, I built what is called a chicken tractor.
I used 2 x 2 cedar and metal l brackets.

I covered it with hardware cloth.

I used the slap hammer to attach the cloth.

I used plastic roofing panels that let in light but keep them dry in the rain.

It's meant to be mobil. You can use it to move chickens around in the yard. I use it so the chickens have a place to be in the mornings until I let them out in the big yard.

It needs to be easy to move so we can clean in there. It's big enough to take two of us but it tips up easily.

Now we can clean the area with lots of help from the chickens and dogs.

After cleaning we just lower it back down and push the ramp into the door.

I also ran the hardware cloth about 2" below the bottom rail so I can bury it in the dirt. That helps to keep the mice and other small varmits out of the hen house.

Chicken tractors can be made in any size and are a pretty inexpensive way to keep them safe.

She is fourth in the pecking order after Beulah, Ella and Mona- then it's Margarate and Blanch (aka Scruffy)

If I pay any attention to Margarate or Blanch then Mona will come over and attach them. And, when I say attack I mean beakfulls of feathers. If I don't pay any attention to them eveything is just fine.

I don't understand why she does that -she is not the ruler of the roost, that's Beulah. I try to give them treats when she is not around so they don't feel left out.

He has built 4 theaters now in our homes. Each home has gotten bigger so each theater has gotten bigger. We were lucky enough to be able to build our very own dream home so he got to design it from scratch.

If you are thinking of putting in a home theater then check out Dave's site. He can help you. There are tons of articles and reviews on equipment, movies and furniture.

I had such fun keeping this journal and it has been sort of an external memory for me as it's so easy to forget the day to day work that happens over the course of a few years.

I reccomend to anyone starting a big project to start a blog. I am partical to Typepad since it was so easy to use but there are tons of formats out there-some are free and some are pay. Most will let you start free and upgrade as you get educated about blogging.

If you would like to know what it's like to build your dream home from the ground up then check it out here.

I have been lucky to be able to watch a Poppa Hairy Woodpecker feed his fat little baby the last few days.

The little guy is so fat.

He waits on the tree while Dad fills up at the feeder and then he flies over to feed him. I have not gotten very clear pics because they just don't quit moving.

I have been seeing them for the last 4 days. The baby has yet to try to fly to the feeder himself.

I don't mind sharing. I think we have planted enough for everyone but they are little piglets!

I really don't want to kill them, I just want to make it uncomfortable for them so they move on. I heard some good tips on the raido the other day. They apparantly don't like crawling over anything rough like lava rock or oyster shell. I am going to pick up some oyster shell at the Cenex today and see if that will save the lettuce.
