Jane's Backyard Chickens

Janes Backyard Chickens, Backyard Birdwatching and Gardening

It all started with a trip to Cenex for some straw. We were using it to soak up muddy areas while we built our house. It was free chicken day. I didn't know this. When I got up to pay for the straw the clerk informed me that I had two free chickens coming with my purchase and which ones did I want.

Chickens? No, I didn't need any chickens, it was too soon. We were not even going to have a house to live in for months. I left, drove around a bit and I couldn't stop thinking about them. I went back to claim my two free chickens. By the time I finished buying all the things I needed for two baby chickens I qualified for two more baby chickens!

I guess there really is no such thing as a "free chicken" but I love them and this webite is all about the sheer joy of keeping backyard chickens as well as backyard birdwatching and gardening.

All things I get to do now that we are actually living in our dream home!

I don't know what it is but lately we have been seeing a ton of birds and wildlife. It might have to do with the bounty of berries and fish or perhaps it's all the birds leaving the nest about now.

Excellent Bird ID site

I have come across the coolest site for learning about birds. http://www.whatbird.com They have logged information on over 900 birds. One of the best parts of this site is their search engine for identifying birds.

When you keep chickens ( or any animals) you have a responsibility to keep them safe. I have gone through several hen areas and each one gets better. Over the last year we did loose two hens to a mink and one to an owl. Each time I rebuilt their home.
